The Buffalo Bills looked like contenders in 2011 when they opened the season 52. They really had us fooled when they beat New England. Folks in Buffalo were getting ready for the playoffs for the first time in a long time. But, easy come, easy go. The Bills finished 610 and missed the playoffs for the 12th straight season. But don fault the Bills too much because the injury bug hit them hard. The defense couldn stop anyone and the offense wasn productive with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB. Dave Wannstedt is the new offensive coordinator and they signed perhaps the biggest need during the offseason in DE Mario Williams. Williams will help a defense that ranked 26th in the NFL in 2011. But Williams wasn the only big signing on defense as they inked DE Mark Anderson as well. Expectations are high in Buffalo as they hope the officialnikeSaintsjerseyshop.com playoff drought ends in 2012.
OFFENSE: Chan Gailey used the spread attack with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing out of the shotgun. Fitzpatrick is accurate and smart in the pocket but his arm strength is questionable. In his defense, Fitzpatrick did suffer a rib injury half www.officialnikesaintsjerseyshop.com/WOMENS-DARREN-SPROLES-JERSEY.html way through the season that may have contributed to his second half struggles. Vince Young was signed to be the backup but he may be better suited than Fitzpatrick in Gailey system. Even if Young isn the starter he is much better than last year 2 Tyler Thigpen. Brad Smith will be used in the The Bills ran the ball well early in the season thanks to Fred Jackson. Spiller was moved to receiver early in the year. Jackson is elusive and can break tackles with excellent balance. Jackson was well on his way to an AllPro season when he went down in week 11 with a broken fibula. Spiller came on strong after Jackson injury and showed why the Bills are very high on his abilities. Spiller isn the workhorse that Jackson is. Tashard Choice showed signs at times last year and FB Corey McIntyre is mostly effective on special teams. Buffalo top receiver is Stevie Johnson. Johnson won be considered a speed demon but he can beat the corners when played one on one. The question is who will play opposite Johnson? Donald Jones suffered an injury in week 11 that ended his season. Jones is a tough receiver who blocks well and has good speed. David Nelson has excellent size and good hands. Marcus Early hasn been able to play because of a heart ailment but the team is hoping he can develop into a downfield threat. T. J. Graham is a former track star and is a burner. Graham is a great vertical threat but needs to be more physical and must hold onto the football. Ruvell Martin and Derek Hagen will provide veteran depth and Naaman Roosevelt is hoping to get more reps. TE Scott Chandler is a good route runner and has good size. Lee Smith and Mike Caussin will fight for backup time. The Bills offensive line improved greatly at the beginning of the 2011 season. Center Eric Wood was the cornerstone of this unit who is a great communicator and is very determined to succeed. When Wood was injured the line struggled. Guard Andy Levitre can fill in at center and tackle but is best at guard. Kraig Urbik and Chad Rinehart could battle for starting positions. Erik Pears won a starting job last season and was signed to a contract extension. Pears is a good technician and is very good at the point of attack. Chris Hairston won a starting job after Demetress Bell went down with an injury. Hairston will struggle at times but has good arm length. Cordy Glenn will compete with Hairston for a starting spot from day one. Glenn is huge and moves well for his size. Rookie Zebrie Sanders will be a versatile swing backup. Michael Jasper moved over from the defensive line last season and has promise. Mark Asper, Sam Young and Colin Brown add depth.
DEFENSE: The Bills defense began the 2011 season with plenty of optimism but ended with too many holes to succeed. Dave Wannstedt will take Kids Darren Sproles Jersey over and transition this group to a 43 scheme with the addition of Mario Williams and Mark Anderson. Williams is a complete player and will return to having his hands on the ground in the 43. Williams is big, strong and is a great athlete. DE Chris Kelsay and Anderson will make the Bill defensive line one of the best in the AFC. Kelsay is more suited to play the 43 and Anderson had 10 sacks with the Patriots in 2011. DT Marcell Dareus had a great season in 2011. Dareus is strong and has the ability to get to the QB. Undersized Kyle Williams is very athletic but is coming back from a foot injury in 2011. Shawne Merriman was inconsistent last season and had a hard time staying healthy. If he can stay on the field, he can be a subpackage rusher. Danny Batten has shown promise and is a key on special teams but hasn lived up to expectations. DT Kellen Heard has plenty of upside but is battling back injuries. Dwan Edwards, Torell Troup, Alex Carrington and Spencer Johnson will factor in the rotation. At Linebacker, Nick Barrett was the best acquisition last season and will line up on the weak side this season. Barrett has range and is a three down linebacker. Kelvin Sheppard will be the starting linebacker. Barrett has great instincts and is a hitter. There are some questions on the strong side with Arthur Moats moving from the outside to the inside last season. Moats showed signs as a pass rusher in the 34 but must learn the strong side in the 43. Kirk Morrison is a versatile linebacker who can be a tackle machine. Nigel Bradham is explosive who must improve his instincts but will fit into the mix. Chris White, Bryan Scott and Tank Carder will also look for playing time. The Bills saw many struggles at cornerback. Drayton Florence was cut in May. He was too inconsistent so the Bills went for a youth movement. Aaron was another player who was injured in 2011 but hopes to stay healthy in 2012. He has good ball skills and is a physical player. Stephon Gilmore is a big, physical corner who is fast with a great upside. Veteran Terrance McGee is good against the run but can stay healthy. The Bills are solid at safety. George Wilson is the leader and Jarius Byrd is underrated. Leodis McKelvin is hoping to get more playing time after losing his job last season. Ron Brooks, Bryan Scott, Da Searcy will help in multiple spots.
SPECIAL TEAMS: Punter Brian Moorman isn the punter he once was but is still one of the NFL top punters. Kicker Rian Lindell was another Bills player who was put on injured reserve in 2011. Lindell looks to return to form this season.
SUMMARY: This isn a return to the 1990 Bills teams but they are making strides in the right direction. They have enough talent to match their AFC East opponents. The additions on defense will be a huge benefit and the Bills must stay healthy. If they do, the playoffs are a strong possibility.
